Sandstone Trail 2018
In March of the 2018, 28 members of Alvanley Cricket Club set off on a mission to raise enough funds to buy a mower to cut the club’s outfield. The mission was to walk all or part of the Sandstone Trail.
10 walkers tackled the 34 miles from Whitchurch to Alvanley across the muddy fields and footpaths of Cheshire. Two others set of from Whitchurch but chose to run the 29 miles by road to Alvanley! Another ceded to his suspect knee and walked the road route.
Another sizable group set of from Beeston to assault 17 miles whilst the final group toughed out the picturesque final 7 miles from Gresty’s Waste.
The conditions were appalling with heavy mud featuring most of the way. Teamwork pulled some along that would have struggled otherwise but individually everyone challenged themselves to complete a gruelling day’s work.
The outcomes were many not least the wonderful cosiness of the pavilion steeped in the smells of beer, stew and the accumulative 611 miles of walking socks!
This was heroic stuff with the final walkers descending on the club in darkness but to the warm welcome of rousing applause.
Congratulations to all who took part and many thanks to the support team – from bar staff, to stew makers, support drivers and to TESCO for helping out with food and drink.
The total raised? £5200. This will allow the club to buy a very decent mower and ultimately improve the outfield used by adults and juniors alike throughout the Summer. You can still donate www.justgiving.com/fundraising/accsandstonetrail
An outstanding effort!
